Gynecomastia in Memphis
Gynecomastia is the medical term for an excess of breast tissue in men, whether fat, glandular tissue, or both. Gynecomastia surgery is performed to reduce the excess tissue and create a more defined, masculine chest. At University Plastic Surgeons in Memphis, we perform gynecomastia surgery to help our male patients resolve this uncomfortable and embarrassing condition.
What Causes Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia can be the result of several factors, including your genetic background, weight gain, aging, or as a side effect of some medications. Gynecomastia can develop early in childhood or later in life. It is often a source of embarrassment for men.
The Benefits Gynecomastia Surgery
Addressing gynecomastia with surgery will reduce an excess of glandular breast tissue. No amount of diet or exercise can effectively resolve this problem. Gynecomastia surgery is performed to remove the glandular tissue, tighten the skin, and create a tauter, more sculpted, masculine chest.
Some of the benefits include:
Greater definition to the pectoral muscles
Resizing the areola for men with overlarge nipples
Increased self-confidence
Restores the ability to wear form-fitting shirts or comfortably go shirtless at the beach or pool
Am I a candidate?
Candidates for gynecomastia surgery are men who have been unable to reduce the size of their breasts through exercise or dieting. If you suffer from gynecomastia and feel embarrassed about the condition, our team at University Plastic Surgeons can help. The best way to determine whether gynecomastia surgery is right for you is to schedule a consultation with one of our plastic surgeons.
We will evaluate the following:
How close you are to your ideal weight and whether you are maintaining a stable weight
Your medical history
Whether you are a smoker or can stop smoking for several weeks prior to surgery
The medications you take
What will be required in your individual case, including whether liposuction is needed along with surgery and whether your areola should be altered in size
Gynecomastia surgery is an excellent treatment for men who want to resolve an excess of breast tissue and create a firmer, more sculpted chest.
The Gynecomastia Surgery Procedure
The procedure requires anesthesia, and our surgeon will determine which type of anesthesia is appropriate. If your chest is enlarged due to excess fat, then liposuction may be all that is required to reshape your chest, particularly if your skin is flexible and firm.
If the condition is the result of an excess of glandular tissue and fat, then an excision technique will be used to remove the excess tissue and reshape the chest. For many men with gynecomastia, both excision and liposuction will be performed to achieve the best results.

Will the incisions be noticeable once they have healed?
The incisions will be placed in discrete areas for precision removal of fat and glandular tissue and smooth, even results. They will be placed around the areola or for men with excess skin, an additional incision may be placed above the pectoral muscles. The incisions are always strategically placed to minimize visible scarring.
What should I expect during the recovery period?
During the recovery period, you will wear a compression garment to support your chest as it heals. In the early stages of healing, you may have drainage tubes to clear any fluid buildup. It is normal to experience some bruising and swelling, which will subside within one to two weeks. All strenuous exercise must be avoided until about six weeks following the procedure. It is vital that no stress is placed on the incisions during recovery.
